Fun re-read, kind of dated now. Y2K worries were kind of funny.

Very similar to Dream Man, though Now You See Her is a bit more readable and I preferred it. Both the heroines have some sort of inexplicable paranormal gift that makes them able to solve crimes. The heroes fall instantly in love, talking marriage after just a week of knowing the heroine. The hero in Dream Man was a cop, the hero in Now You See Her was in the army. Both heroines are loners, have little family, and are extremely introverted. They both are oblivious to men and have never been in a long term relationship until they meet the hero.

They're not bad books. Just, like I said, way too alike. I know, because I read Shades of Twilight, that Linda Howard can do better than this novel. So I'm going to continue to read through her backlist, but Now You See Her is definitely not a favorite. I don't like instant love connections and I prefer their be more focus on the romantic relationship in a romantic suspense than on the murder mystery.

This must be the worst book I have read for some time and I read quite a lot of books.
This was an erotica/mystery and both parts were equally terrible.
Howard's deeply misogynistic views shone through with how she demonised Candra for having multiple sexual partners and for the 'crime' of having an abortion. Richard's behaviour towards Sweeney was also consistently predatory and showed no respect for her boundaries and at some points was really sexual assault and this was portrayed as sexy and romantic.
The actual sex scenes were vile and made me feel truly the opposite of aroused.
The mystery of Sweeney being able to see ghosts and paint the future etc. is never explained apart from some naff comment about horoscopes at the end. Sweeney appears to have been severely abused in her childhood with her commenting off-hand at one point about her mother and mother's boyfriend trying to have sex with her when she was a teenager and having sex in front of her when she was a young child but this is just brushed past and not given any gravity?
The murder mystery revelation doesn't really make any sense and Margo McMillian just does not have enough motivation to kill Candra and then try to kill Sweeney.
Richard proposing at the end after they have been together literally one week also gives me the ick.
For the love of God don't read this book!

10/1/21-- relistened and enjoyed it. The story is fine and I probably would rate it 3 or 3.5 stars today (B-/C+), but the narration is quite good and I enjoyed listening so I'll leave the combined rating at 4 stars. B/B-

TBR Challenge 2012-Personal Category: This book has been on my to-read list since Dec 10, 2010.

A-/B+
This book has been on my to-read list for over a year, but I never got around to getting a print copy. When it was available for a good price as an audiobook on audible, I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I listened to the audiobook instead of reading the book. While I would have liked the book in print, I can't help but think the narrator increased my enjoyment quite a bit. Narrator Laura Lefkow's unusual delivery worked perfectly for the heroine. The reader felt the distracted way Sweeney's mind worked, complete with her vagueness and social unease. It was very well done.

Although I figured out the killer early on, I still enjoyed the mystery. The characters, from Sweeney and Richard to the secondary characters, like the police detectives, were well fleshed out and enjoyable. The dialogue was well written and made sense, something I always appreciate!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and fast paced. I didn't want to put it down. The characters are great and an interesting story line. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if all the details get solved in the end. However, it was still a great book.
