This definitely isn't a bad book, and it's great that it has really appealed to others, I think it just isn't for me personally.

Because I had certain incorrect assumptions going into this book, I found it to be a lot less pacey than I was hoping for. There were definitely multiple threads happening at once where we are wondering
Whilst I understand the reason why we don't get the answer as to why Avery was left almost everything until almost the end of the book, it was frustrating to have to wait. I think part of the frustration is due to the fact that there wasn't really any way that it could be guessed or theorized. Well, I'm sure some smart people put it together but I didn't 🤣
I am glad that the story was relatively wrapped-up in one book rather than trying to stretch things out for the trilogy.

this book met my high expectations...i really enjoyed it! i definitely found the overall idea/concept very intriguing and unique - a seemingly "random" girl inherits a bunch of money from a man she thinks she has never met. it was fun to try and find out what was going to happen next and solve the clues alongside the characters. the short chapters were also the best. they made me feel like i was reading a lot when i wasn't actually.
on the other hand, i wasn't a huge fan of the romance - it was a love triangle, which i am not a huge fan of in general. and i also didn't really feel the chemistry avery had with either jameson or grayson as i found it a bit absurd she was pursuing a relationship with either of them. some points were also a bit confusing and there was almost too much going on for me and a few too many characters to keep track of. it felt like i was trying to figure out a bunch of different things at once (why did avery get chosen by tobias hawthorne? how did emily die? what happened to tobias hawthorne's son? etc.) and that made it a little overwhelming...i wish it had maybe been just a bit simpler. however, that is more of a personal preference and didn't negatively impact my experience too much.
the characters were alright, not bad but nothing special. avery was a decent main character and i definitely liked libby. and the ending...wow. it definitely made the book worth it. yes, a lot was crammed at the end, but i was glad to have at least some of my questions answered (and i was definitely a bit shocked!). i am excited to read [b:the hawthorne legacy|50531218|The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, #2)|Jennifer Lynn Barnes|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1610493390l/50531218._SY75_.jpg|75512627] and see what happens next! overall, i would recommend if you're looking for a fun mystery or fall read!!

I have no idea why it’s not a five star read for me, but I just don’t have that attachment that I normally feel to the book that I have given 5 stars to. I think that might be because it’s a YA read. Don’t get me wrong. This is a great book but it was an easy and enjoyable read.
