Fantastic fourth book in the Sean Duffy series, and a great read. Really enjoy the way McKinty paints a scene and how he conveys the liquid passage of time.

A delicious read.

One of my favorite crime series. Pure entertainment, plus a good history lesson on the Northern Ireland troubles. What a mess.

The more Sean Duffy books I read, the less I understand his character. He is allegedly a Catholic, but it’s just tacked in here and there. He doesn’t seem to change or grow, and I have no idea why he remains in the RUC.

His lovers have about a 50% survival rate, which I find to be misogynist and also old-fashioned.

These are more like action stories or spy stories than police procedurals.

I am interested in McKinty’s portrayal of Northern Ireland so I will keep reading. I do enjoy most of the book, but the sour notes are very sour.

The fourth Sean Duffy book is as ever an entertaining read which combines the dark humour of those individuals living in a society where violence is an everyday reality with well plotted crime writing and political intrigue.
An apparent domestic murder should be a routine investigation until Duffy finds links to something more sinister with links to mi5 and the selling of arms uncovered in the American contra affairs.
A cracking series and I can't wait to read book 5.

Annnd... Duffy's back. He's been shot, beaten up, demoted and generally abused but he's back. This time he's investigating the murder of a couple, which leads to the suicide of their son. Yeah, Duffy's not buying that either. There are hints of Oxford's Bullingdon Club, American support for the IRA, the Iran-Contra Affair and, of course, over it all, Ireland's Troubles. For some reason, this didn't impress me as much as the previous Duffy books did, but I can't wait for the third series (books 5 and 6 in this one were published during my Alex years. no comment beyond that.)
