Interesting book, especially given when it was written. Still pertinent today.

On the surface Fight Club is a very boring book. Underneath the surface Fight Club is a slightly less boring book. Either way, this was a boring book.
I did not like the protagonist at all, but I did like the psychological backstory and the deteriorating of his mental state. It was interesting for Palahniuk to explore such a complex mental health issue in his protagonist, but that is the only thing I can praise about this story. Other than that, the plot was not my style; I don't care for fighting or the crisis of masculinity (as demonstrated in this book, anyway). I didn't enjoy the narrative voice as he was monotonous and dull. None of the side characters were fully developed or included enough - I specifically didn't like the role of Marla, she didn't seem to add anything to the story apart from having sex with the protagonist and ultimately trying to save his life.
Despite it being such a popular and highly praised book (and film), I probably wouldn't ever recommend it.

I thought half-way through this book that I was going to rate it 2-3 stars... then I got to the ending and WOW that just made the whole thing way better. I think it took me a while to get used to the writing style (reminding me of Vonnegut) and warm up to the unreliable narration. After that, it became more enjoyable to read.

The Fight Club Diaries: just bros being dudes
Definitely love the movie more than the book because it's just easier to follow. The book is written kind of all over the place though which I love because it is like the Narrator is simply just thinking. Which is very chaotic but chuck palahniuk killed it.
