A tense story of survival at the end of times and a tender, slow burn romance all rolled into one. It was a bit slow and the days blurred together in their scurry to survive but you get so much from the characters that it reads quickly.

“Darlin’. I’m doin’ a terrible job of sayin’ this. I’ll try again.
You’re not gonna lose me. Not unless you want me gone. I’m gonna do
whatever you do. If you wanna join Maria, then I’ll trail around behind you like
a lost puppy. Me and the dog. Or if you wanna hook up with Mack or some other
man, I’ll make myself a third wheel and I’ll practice deep breathin’ so I don’t
beat the man’s face in for gettin’ to touch you like I... Or if you wanna stick with
the caravan after all, I’ll learn to be patient and put up with not bein’ in control.
You’re not gonna lose me, Layne. But I’m tryin’ to tell you that you don’t have
to fuck me to keep me. You have me, even if you never want me to touch you
again." screaming crying throwing up. this man oh my god.

I liked this a lot! I thought this was a really well done example of falling in love with the grumpy one syllable grunting mmc. I feel like too often the fmc falls for that type of guy without them ever really having any sort of communication and I feel like “really? You don’t even know him!” But this was a sweet story and seeing Travis open up was nice. Didn’t love the miscommunication trope at the end, and first person present tense not my preference for a story to be written in. But all in all I really liked the characters and enjoyed reading this

i’m finding that i really enjoy post apocalyptic romance stories, and this one definitely scratched the itch for me! the plot was fairly simple considering the genre, but i liked both of the main characters so much that it didn’t bother me. travis is such a sweet grump, and layne as a heroine felt pretty realistic to me in that kind of environment. although this wasn’t a five star read for me (i had some issues with the pacing), i’ll for sure be reading more from this author!

Claire Kent writes the kind of dystopian love stories I like! Layne and Travis are great, and I loved reading about them traveling together through dangerous post-apocalyptic country toward safety.
