Racist depictions of black people, and liberal use of slurs

Katie Deauxma is more realistic in this one. Different from the movie, but still really good. 2 stars off for misogynistic slurs (and use of the ultra homophobic f** word) throughout the entire book.

I have NO RESPECT for Mark Millar and I can go on forever about how much of a turd he is and how repulsive his writing is. I read the book after watching the movie and once again, the movie was so much better than the book.

Just like Millar, the book was incredibly racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and probably other forms of prejudice that I just don't recall right now. All the women (except for Hit-Girl) were simply toys for Millar to play with. If any characters of color walked into a panel, there would be racist slurs flying back and forth, very classy. I would've been satisfied if Hit-Girl simply killed everyone at the end, since she was the only redeeming quality in the book. I didn't care what happened to Kick-Ass.

Just watch the first movie, forget about this sorry excuse for writing.

It lives up to it's title. I like the things the movie changed, but I think the book works better. It's breezier.

I picis up after seeing the film adaptation and I was pleasantly surprised with how close to the source material they'd stayed. There were a few differences- most notably the love story between Dave and Katie (every good film needs a good love interest, right?) and the origin story of Big Daddy and Hit Girl (I thought the comic was much grittier and heartbreaking) -but nothing so major that it made me go "Hmm, yeah, the film is way better!"
Maybe it's because it's the idea? Getting a superhero costume online and going out to fight crime in your spare time? Like Dave says in the book- who hasn't dreamed about doing that? Kick Ass gives you that dream situation, the one almost every kid has fantasised about, and puts it in the real world- with real situations, real "bad guys" and real lessons learnt.

I liked the movie better for this one. Kick-Ass/Dave was a much better character in the movie, while he was pretty insufferable in the book. 3 stars mostly for Hit Girl, who was by far the best thing about the book.
