A great triptych of Poe's time with Zorii Bliss. And Babu Frik's in it, too!!

God this book was a slog. I loved the first few chapters, the middle was rough but the end was amazing. It shouldn’t have taken me being a quarter of the way through to get into it, especially as Poe is one of my all time favourite characters but hey it was alright in the end.

It’s a book. Nothing special but not bad by any means. I do wish there was less focus on the relationship with Zorii and more on the relationship between Poe and his father- especially as there were a lot of loose ends on that front. It also would have been nice to tie it more into the movies/comics/tvshows or the Before the Awakening book.

Read like fanfiction (not in a bad way) but the pacing was the major let down of the book.

Received E arc from netgalley. This is a great Star Wars story that gives great back story to Poe Dameron Zarri Bliss and a few other characters from The Rise of Skywalker. Kept my interest through out the whole novel. Great read

"I'm going to be the best pilot the galaxy's ever seen. Bank on it."
- Poe Dameron

Poe "Cutie-Pie" Dameron is currently by far one of the most explored main characters in the Resistance era storytelling. We've had three movies, lots of Star Wars Resistance episodes, an entire comic line, and lots more, but there's a pretty big gap in there.

A pretty big, spice running gap.

The shady times.

If you've kept up with Poe's story in other media there are a few familiar faces. From a bit more info about his family to his days as Poe Dameron: Runner of Spice. There is plenty of space piloting, ship-battling, and blaster shootouts for that classic Star Wars adventure feel. While we are all familiar with who Poe becomes, this is an interesting exploration of a ginormous misstep along that path.

For Poe Dameron diehards this is a must-read. Seeing this early adventure unfold and learning the choices that lead him back to finding his true path is illuminating. Poe shows us what it's like to find yourself in a life that you feel trapped in. The details that I especially enjoyed were L'ulo, the A-Wing, Boshek, the Guavians, Obah Diah, Kessel, hyperspace skipping, Sorgan, the Pyke Syndicate, a Y-Wing, chaka-root, the Dai-Bendu, iced mocoa, and Babu!!

Free Fall is everything that you would expect from a YA book focused on Poe Dameron: it’s a fast-paced bildungsroman involving a young hot-shot pilot getting into trouble with criminals in a galaxy far, far away. Poe’s parents are former rebellion heroes who settled down on Yavin 4 after the fall of the Empire, but the peace that his father values is driving Poe crazy. All Poe wants is to fly, like his mom, and have a life of adventure. His father only wants Poe to be safe. This opposition leads Poe to hastily accept a job as a pilot before he learns that he’ll be flying for the Spice Runners of Kijimi. Although he didn’t anticipate joining a criminal organization, Poe quickly falls into a life of adventure and into friendship with Zorii Bliss.

One of the most important things for me when reading a SW novel is to hear the voice of known characters when reading. Segura captures the voice of Poe, Zorii, and Babu Frik and they come life on the page. It’s great to read about what is obviously a pivotal time for Poe in his teens and to learn more about his backstory. I was also excited to learn more about the mysterious Zorii whom we met in TROS. I do wish that the interaction with Poe and Zorii had been shown more on page. They share many adventures, but we are told many times about their friendship and the quiet moments when they bonded away from the crew, yet we don’t see that foundation of their friendship. Nevertheless, when it comes to giving background on events that are hinted at in TROS, this book does a great job.

Free Fall is a fun adventure story and a good addition to the SW canon. TROS hinted at an intriguing backstory for Poe and Zorii, and Segura delivers.

Finally, I'm done reading this book! Yes it's not big at all but for some reason I had to force myself to read the first 180-or-so pages (almost the first half of the book) before I finally got hooked. I could've dnf this book sooner but I'm a ride-or-die poe dameron fan since 2017 and I *had* to finish this book.

Now, my main problem is that this just points out Poe's main flaw... He's loyal to a person, not a cause, and this is the same issue pointed out in TLJ... Which basically indicates that in 15 years, Poe is still the same teenager... Disappointing but not surprising. This book was most likely commissioned by Disney during TROS's pre-production to make more money on the side so wether this story gives more insight on (my beloved) Poe or not doesn't really matter... In the end it was juste a cashgrab.

Here goes the answer to Poe Dameron's mysterious backstory that was hinted in "rise of skywalker"!

I have to say, I'm impressed. Since page 1, the author knew it was going to take me into a wild ride and indeed, I was definitely caught up in all the action that the star wars universe provides us , and for this character to receive a mysterious and intriguing past, just like the character himself.... I am definitely satisfied. Fast-paced action, adventures in the stars as well as finding oneself in such a big galaxy...er, well society, Poe definitely makes many choices, some of which helped him become the person he is now and other choices that could've meant the end of his existence. His blooming romance with Zorri was nice, I enjoyed that plot and as for the different characters in this book... I absolutely loved the diverse cast of characters in this book. Definitely a great read.... I would loove to read a sequel sometime because this was great!!
