Perhaps I underrated the predecessor volume, Imperium. Harris does an excellent job bringing the days of Cicero (and Caesar, Pompey, Crassus, and Cato) to life. Although I still wish the language more closely resembled what a translation of a Roman document would read like, I can't complain about the chance to become more educated about this famous period of history.

How someone can take such breathtaking events as the Catalina revolt and make them, well, dull to read, I don't know. Compared to Saylor, Davis, McCullough and others who set their novels in similar times, this was something of a yawn, and I skip read the last half.

Really well researched and written. I did find the the first book more exciting, following his law cases, speeches and rise to power. Looking forward to the final book in the series.
