ayobámi the writer that you are!!!!!!
akin you raggedy goat. yejide epele-o.
i inhaled this story.
it made me swell with pride to be yorùbá, and also feel shame/ sad at not knowing a lot about my language and ethnic culture.

a searing story about the lengths a nigerian woman will go to bear children, and the choices that result in mistakes, deceit and further loss along the way. adébáyo writes for
nigerians and not the white gaze, and i can only *imagine* the pushback she may have faced in publishing to do so.

“If the burden is too much and stays too long, even love bends, cracks, comes close to breaking and sometimes does break. But even when it’s in a thousand pieces around your feet, that doesn’t mean it’s no longer love.”

Can’t remember the last time I was so gut punched by a book - I’ve read some truly heavy/sad subject matter and while it does impact me, I can’t remember the last time I truly sobbed after finishing the final page of a book. For the record I wouldn’t necessarily categorize this as a “sad” novel, but just so heart-achingly emotional. The ending is such a release, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days.

Honestly a painful read. A testament to how people’s traumas and avoidance can lead to the undoing of a relationship and hurt the person you love most. Provides some insight into Yoruba culture at the same time.
