First 5 stars in a while, such a powerful read. I loved Liesel, so much depth and such a well rounded character. I loved the narration by Death. Hans and Rosa were incredible characters too, I really admired them, there relationship, and their morals. Max was so sweet and I loved his relationship with Liesel. I liked seeing Liesel’s first crush feeling too. Everyone should read this book.

the book thief by markus zusak is a beautiful tale of friendship amidst ww2 germany.

WARNING: spoilers ahead

it tells the story of liesel meminger, who's brother suddenly dies and her mother is forced to leave her in a foster home in order to save her from nazi persecution. there, she quickly befriends her foster dad hans hubermann, in whom she finds solace amidst the chaos. later, she meets rudy steiner, her friendly and energetic neighbor who just so happens to have a boyish crush on her.

the book eventually develops to liesel's foster family taking in a jewish fugitive by the name of max, who hides out in their basement in hopes of escaping the fate of the concentration camps. liesel quickly befriends max and grows attached to him. eventually, max leaves the hubermann's home in order to free them from the dangers of hiding him within their home. shortly after, their town is bombed and everyone liesel came to grow fond of perishes in the destruction of the bombing.

the interesting narratives of death's character makes this book even more haunting, and while it is a beautiful tale of friendship and love, it also focuses on grim themes such as death and grief. it is a beautiful story and i would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading it 🌟

I really loved this book - very smart to have Death as the narrator and adds an interesting removed element to it

It was desperately sad and explores the many victims of war and the fact that everyday humanity still exists even in the darkest of times

It reminded me a bit of the boy in the striped pyjamas, but with more moving around and exploring contexts of the war on a wider scale and how it affected those of Hemmel street

I loved all the characters in their own unique way and l was sad to leave their story
