This was our October "spooky" book club choice and I loved it! Within the first 5 pages, the writing was so descriptive and creative. The premise is daughter Vera is coming back home to take care of the house for her dying mother, Daphne. Going back to this house isn't easy because it's the same house "her father built" and crazy stuff went down regarding her father, Francis. It was very creepy when Vera would see and hear things within the house and in an instant- she's taken back to when she was little and hearing the same things. I don't wanna get too into the story because you need to experience this story and relive it all with Vera. It's so good and such a page turner. Literally, just when you think you figured it all out...BAM you're wrong. So glad I got to read this book!

This was a 5 star read for me until the last few chapters. I don’t know if I buy the twist. However, I’m impressed enough with Gailey’s writing style to settle at 4 stars.

This book rocked. The beginning lowered my defenses this vibe of a a cookie-cutter "injured girl with a secret comes home" premise. It was entertaining enough and dark enough to keep me reading. And the ending was fuckin brilliant. Great book.

To call this book a delight feels like a misnomer because it centers on such a heavy subject, but I mean delightful in the way that I couldn't put it down. I was so invested in the story and uncovering more about each character as the plot unfolded. It's spooky, thriller-y, supernatural-y, and who doesn't love a haunted house (no one I care do know)? Gailey strikes again with another amazing story that has heart, guts (some literal), and made me want to go buy the physical book just so I could experience the story again, sans audio. Additionally, the narrator is amazing and has such a dynamic way of using their voice, each character felt unique.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for providing this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This book could not be less interesting. Sarah is trying very hard to be creepy and mysterious, but it comes off boring and repetitive. If i didn’t know her “mother was dying” and her “father built this house” after the first chapter i sure did by the last.

The characters are as slow and irredeemable as the story. The “house guest” believes in hauntings, so much so that his work is dependent on it. Yet, doesn’t believe they are the cause of his anguish?
Vera knows everything that has happened and has been going on at the house. But it never clicks until its right in front of her face. Even then she can barely piece it together.

Not worth your time unless you realllly love Sarah’s writing.
