Ian is... Ian 😏 I'm glad he didn't disappoint, he's as crazy and funny as ever.
Veritas, on the other hand, fell a bit flat in my opinion. She is badass, but that is the only thing I liked about her. There was nothing else interesting about her character. I knew the author would go for a badass female to pair with Ian, but I would have preferred if she simply paired him with a human instead.

I think that can be contributed to the fact that I feel like I've personally outgrown the whole paranormal genre and I prefer to read about character development rather than action, battling with creatures etc.

And what bothers me is that it seems there is always a solution in Frost's world. There is always a new magical trick that saves everyone or a new creature-hybrid that comes to rescue at the last minute and that bores me.

So 4/5 stars for a flat heroine and a huge CLIFFHANGER at the end! I'll be reading the sequels though, because - Ian 😏

UPDATED REVIEW (1/25/2022):
UPDATED RATING (5 STARS -- SAME)

When I first went into reading this spinoff about Ian from the Night Huntress series I wasn’t looking forward to it very much. I haven’t actually loved the spin offs from this series very much so I didn’t expect to love this.

But boy did I LOVE this book. So much so that Ian and Veritas made it to my favorite couple list. They are awesome both together and separate. Who would’ve known that these two would be so amazing.

Just to give you an idea of how much I loved this book please know that I re-read it after about a week. Yep. I never do that. After finishing the last book in the trilogy I actually wanted to go right back to the beginning right away. It’s that good.

Ian and Veritas have mucho chemistry together, the plot and story is exciting and interesting, and the Night Huntress world that continues to form is made even more intricate and deep than it was before. This is quite honestly a perfect spin off series.

As for the first book we are re-introduced to Ian and Veritas who we have both met in the Night Huntress series. They both are tied together via a very dangerous problem in the form of a certain demom. This plot spans the entire trilogy while also introducing several related sub-plots along the way. It’s an wonderful adventure full of action, fun, sexy times, and heartbreak.

I highly recommend reading the Night Huntress books in order (there is a reading order for all the books in the world including the spinoff series’ within the same world on Jeaniene Frost’s website) to get the most out of these books. Although you could read them without doing that, you will get more from the story and world as a whole if you do.

Love this book, the series, characters, couple, world. All of it. And it will 100% easily be one I will read and re-read to revisit my favorite characters and world again and again. Love, love, love!

Ian is the consummate rogue, sensualist, rebel, force of chaos, law-breaker. Veritas is the consummate law-enforcer. Yeah, you see where this is going.

They have a common interest in bringing down a very powerful demon. They must work together, even though they absolutely do not trust each other. Then secrets are revealed and they find they are not so different from each other and, well, you get the drift.

The chemistry between the two of them is intense (to the point of being very dangerous to the integrity of buildings they copulate in). The dialog is great. The action is lively. This series goes much more into magic as part of the world than Night Huntress or Night Prince did.

But...

The plot gets really contrived (which is why I knocked off a star). One basic problem is that the author as generated so many overpowered characters that she has to go to lengths to keep most of them out of battles. This leads to a significant number of "Just make a phone call, damn it" moments. The entire ending of the book is also a bit too much of a "How do we set this up for a redo?" effort.

All in all, a fun, quick read. And I will be reading the others in the series. I hope this series gives an explanation for the legal changes that were just sort of stated as backstory in _A Grave Girls' Getaway_.

My review from Audible:

I didn't want it to end.... and it didn't. Shades of Wicked is the first in a series featuring Ian and Veritas... and now we have to wait for the next installment.

The pair has amazing chemistry! The story-line was fast paced, exciting, and sexy. I wondered how Ian's story would work out and was not disappointed. And the cameo appearances of Bones, Cat, and crew just added to the enjoyment.

I loved Tavia Gilbert's narration, including her take on Veritas' accent (what does ancient Sumerian sound like, anyway?). She gave us the sense of a very strong individual with ancient roots.... perfect for Veritas.

So now that I've devoured this volume, I'll say it politely: write quickly, Ms Frost! We're ready for the next one.

January 2020 update: Reread because book #2 is coming out tomorrow!
February 2021 update: Rereading the first two books because the 3rd is being released in a few days.

Ian I like, but veritas and Ian together I didn't buy fully, and the more Iany dastardly aspects were lost in the later story and books.

I jumped the gun on a MacHalo Buddy Read and read this early. In my defense, I had a fancy and decided to unapologetically stroke it.

It's been years since I've read a Jeaniene Frost book, and I am shamefully far behind in the series. So why not just dash ahead and read the new series to Night Huntress Universe? So yea, total major spoilers for me, but I don't regret it.

Sometimes I get too wrapped up in discovering new PN authors that I have to step back and remember where I came from. My love for paranormal comes from authors Ilona Andrews, Jeaniene Frost, Jim Butcher and Patricia Briggs. When Shelly suggested a Jeaniene Frost buddy read I said, "Hell yes!"

Nobody can put the sex in PNR like Jeaniene Frost. Straight from the opening scene Jeaniene had me. It was dripping with hot sexiness and I knew this was going to be a fun book to read. What took me by surprise was how many new types of "powers" and "monsters" there were. Where I left off in the Universe it wasn't as complex or convoluted -- that I remember.

All in all, loved it! Fantastic action and Ian and Veritas make a perfect couple. Looking forward to book 2.
