I liked being back in Nigeria, with new perspective on people I didn't know before. Very sad book.

[b:God's Children Are Little Broken Things|59636025|God's Children Are Little Broken Things Stories|Arinze Ifeakandu|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1637049614l/59636025._SX50_.jpg|57007524] isn't perfect. Some of the sex scenes are a little visceral and some of the stories do blend together. But the stories are raw and real and will ring true not just to the folks who see their experiences mirrored on its pages, but also to anybody who has had to navigate the feeling of being different or the breakdown of a difficult relationship or the lofty expectations set by others. Recommended.

The winner of this year's Dylan Thomas Prize. A book of nine short stories showcasing what is like to be queer in Nigeria, a country where for a gay man, there is no happy ending. Same sex relationships are illegal and so lovers are separated, they suffer prejudice, violence and even death. Relationships are hidden. For me, as someone who does not get on with short story collection, I struggled with this book. I found that I was unable to engage with the characters, the short story format did not allow me enough space in which to get to know them and while I understood the tragedy in some of these stories, for that reason, they did not move me. Out of all the stories the one that I enjoyed - if that is the correct term - the most was that of Tochukwa in Where the Heart Sleeps and his realtionship with his desceased partner's daughter. He is still living in the house that he shared with her father, but the family want to evict him. An interesting collection and a warning for some very detailed and graphic sexual scenes.
