Fantastic beginning. Leckie raises the bar for aspiring space opera authors.

Leckie plays with a large number of big ideas here, but at times it feels at bit too much like eating your spinach.

Great tropes and world that is introduced and delivered in a very dry and slow method. Loads of early dialog that I think would have been fine if given the chance to devolop a relationship with the charactars. Things at least got a tad more interesting at 50%, but by then, I just stopped caring who was who and why was why.

On page 65, I resolved to give up on this book as soon as I reached page 100 (because I make myself read 100 pages to give a book a fair shot). However, I sped past page 100 without even noticing because the story had pulled me in. I normally don't like science fiction about completely other worlds - (I do like time travel and dystopian sci fi). Still, this book was riveting even though I didn't understand half of what was going on. Apparently it's the first of a trilogy, so two more books will be going on my to-be-read shelf. Give this book 100 pages and see what you think!

Hard to capture my feelings on this one into something coherent. I love the exploration of personhood and consciousness in Breq/Justice of Toren, and I'm always a fan of multiple timelines coming together to reveal a storyline. I like the challenge of humanity far-flung across galaxies, yet still as petty and prejudiced as ever, trying their best (not) to get squashed by aliens. LOVE the gender stuff (as a corrective to Leguin's Left Hand of Darkness?). But this is a difficult narrative to follow, and there's a lot of maneuvering I'm just not sure I got. So I'll see how that goes in book 2!
