Interesting story, this book feels like more of a setting of the scene before a main story. Introductions to a cast of characters. Entertaining, compelling characters and worldbuilding. And the art is GORGEOUS.

Visually stunning, an interesting if overdone basic premise, interesting world - but holy smokes is it crude/graphic/vulgar for really no reason. It's not likely I'll continue- I'd like to know more about Hazel and what goes on in general, but the peripheral content isn't worth wading through to me to find out. (Please note this is a matter of personal preference; it's good writing, it's just not for me. 2 stars reflect just how basic the premise is and how much time is devoted to shock factor instead of furthering the plot.)

An epic, broad, sweeping sci-fi graphic novel that certainly lives up to the name Saga. The art is simply outstanding, capturing the iconic superhero comic look but in a way that's scifi unique, somehow painterly, and just gorgeous to look at. The characters are lovable and flawed, and I especially love the handwritten narration amongst the panels from the pov of the child as if she is telling the story of her parents' and her life to the reader. Despite the heaviness of war, death, grief, and loss, there are still joyous and triumphant moments among the main cast and tons of creatively fun side characters and world-building for the eyes to feast on. The big themes of trying to survive and keep love alive amidst a backdrop of complex war are ones that are inherently interesting and serve as a great vehicle for this family's narrative to play out. I cannot wait to read more of this series.

wow. this book's the epitome of perfect art AND story, a feat rarer than rare. ive never been a fan of space opera, or hell, even sf, rly, but book one of saga blows me outta the water. an adventurous story centering on an intergalactic chase of a pair of star-crossed parents caught in a decades old war (a concept reminiscent of DoSaB) story deals w/ meaty themes of family, war, violence; w/ a copious dose of chuckle- and snort-inducing wry humor; expansive and impressive world(s)building; jawdropping cliffhangers; a cast of fleshed out characters w/ intricate relationships; and, sth i rly appreciate, diversity in not only race, sexuality, but also life forms, as befitting its sweeping setting.

however, the story's def mature, w/ plenty of gory, bloody killings and violence, sex scenes, and adult topics like pedophilia and slavery. the art though...holy fcking sh!t, this graphic novel has easily the most incredible comics art ive ever seen--there were plenty of times where a page or a cover art simply rendered me speechless, stunned for several seconds bc of its sheer awesomeness. needless to say, i am now a fiona staples worshipper. kinda intimidated to discover that the series is only half way done, but im def along for this long ride.
