This is the year that I decided I will read Pern series, or at leat make a sizable dent in it. :D
First I had to re-read a couple of books I have read.
It's even more interesting than the first time, because I keep noticing new details. <3

This one was good too. I read these in a weird order lol. This one should have ended after the queen’s flight, the rest of the book was oddly paced and felt like it lacked a driving force. Not sure I like Lessa’s actions there at the end.. wasn’t expecting any moral grayness out of her

I'm burning through these as read-alouds to my family. I feel sort of so-so about the series, honestly. It doesn't really excite me too much, and the characters don't hold much interest for me. The world-building feels a little blah, basically manorialism with a weird variant dragon culture. It's fine, but just sort of... the best way I can describe it is that fantasy that really grabs me feels like it's in full color and this series feels more like it's in sepia tones. I like the books well enough, but I don't like them a lot. I don't regret reading them, but if my wife and son weren't all about them and if we had other more exciting books we were all interested in right now, I'd cheerfully read those instead.

I absolutely love books that get me so invested in the world and the characters that I forget where I am! Dragonquest does this perfectly. I do wish that we had seen a bit more from Brekke's POV, but, still, I loved every emotion this book sparked within me.

Here's my no nostalgia review. First time reading this book in 2023.

(Go check out my Dragonflight review first. I don't wanna just copy and paste my thoughts here)

TLDR: If you read Dragonflight and Dragonquest and still doesn't like this series, you aren't gonna like any of it. I think everyone should give at least these first two books an effort. The sci-fi and characters in this book really hooked me to keep reading.

Dragonquest introduces some interesting characters and way more sci-fi elements. I don't know if I just wasn't paying attention enough in the first book but the sci-fi here really wowed me and I was seriously excited when those elements started popping up (trying not to spoil anything here.) We also get more information on the world which I just can't get enough of at this point.

Personally, I think what got me to keep reading this series (besides the interesting world building) was Jaxom. He is introduced in this book and has a very small role here but I just have a huge soft spot for the hatching scene with him.
