A tough book to read with no overarching theme. West coast dried up, mass migration due to climate change? It hits home .
But, I realized I don't like a unreliable narrator, and definitely not an unlikable, unreliable narrator. I found myself not rooting for anyone and just a sad read. Very descriptive and metaphorical, but still not enjoyable
Spoiler aslo, bringing Ray back to test of Luz growth... Just to wrap up abandoning the child with the crazy harem and suicide out of self-pity? 300+ pages before they can reflect on "boy we shouldn't have done that"

I don't mean to be verbose in my hatred but I can never put my finger on it when I love a book. You just feel it in your bones when the plot, story, and characters come together.

For this, it is almost 50 pages in before you meet the character that drives the plot. Red flag 1. I actively chose to do other things than pick this back up. Red flag 2. I read the first ~80 pages. Skipped to the last ~80 pages and still managed to grasp where the story had gone. Red flag 3.

I was never emotionally invested in the characters. I did not care where they went and what happened to them. I did not question their choices or motives. The writing read like a MFA draft. This was not it for me.
