The story is off to a slow start and feels a little less exciting because we find ourselves back in a Hunger Games arena but the novelty of the concept has worn off a bit.
However the competitors are far more interesting and the growing tensions and revolutionary energy in the districts are compelling as well.

You see a clear deterioration of Katniss' mental health in this book. There are also more details about how horrible their society is.dani_21's review against another edition

I mean, it's the hunger games, it's about kids killing kids and the capitol profiting of the exploitation of the districts.gracewiley's review against another edition

Suzanne Collins is a master with her words, and I pray to the gods I donโt believe in that she releases a new work separate from this world of Panem. Not that I am sick of the Hunger Games, but just to be able to read more of her writing.
One aspect that did grate on me a little was the way Katnissโ obliviousness and staunchness was conveyed. Not that these are bad flaws to give a protagonist, but that I wish it was written out more as an unreliable narration and not dramatic irony. In my opinion the reader could too easily see through Katnissโ flawed assessment of many moments. It was done SO WELL when the wire snapped and Katniss was genuinely confused about Joanna and the situation at large.
