Two and a half stars. Clearly not Coben's best. In fact--the book was not a cohesive whole. I've read pretty much everything Coben's written, and liked most of it, but this outing was an incoherent pastiche.
Let's see. You've got Kat and her father's murder and her cop buddies, all with issues. You've got the boyfriend who dumped her, mysteriously re-appeared. You've got the online dating issue. You've got nasty criminals in different flavors, committing nasty crimes in rather bizarre ways. You've got biracial, bisexual manic-depressives. You've got the wisecracking sidekick, and the little sly references to other Coben characters.
But the pieces don't precisely fit together into a believable story.
And worse, you get Coben's smart-ass verbal tone--the one that works so well for Myron Bolitar--coming out of the mouths of other characters. And finally, you get long stretches of characters running around in the woods or drinking expensive booze, etc etc, that feel like (no nice way to say this) padding. A disappointment, all around.

I usually love Coben books and cannot put them down. I flip furiously from page to page dying to know what happens next. This one drug on for me. I got more into to it towards the end. But then there is the ending. It just kinda leaves you hanging. Not a bad book by any means, I just didn't love it like the rest.

The middle was really slow paced and almost made me stop reading even though it's a good story. The and was very fast paced and felt rushed to me.

It was a quick read but I'm beginning to wonder if I started reading Harlan Coben's better books and now I'm reading...the other ones. Much like the most recent Coben book I read, Six Years, this book centers around a protagonist who pines for a person she once loved...EIGHTEEN years ago. Yes, they were engaged. Yes, they were in love. Yes, I get the whole "What if..." or the "Why did he leave me" concept...but to be this obsessive after 18 years (and 6 years later after 3 months of dating in the other book)...it just becomes annoying and weighs down the whole storyline. The lead character is a cop. It would have made the story so much better to have had her, in a professional capacity, get involved in the plotline. The general storyline, albeit, rather farfetched was still fastpaced and relatively easily read but that obsession...drove me to distraction. And the overly pat and...trite ending...I think I'm giving Coben 1 more try and then writing him off if it's like these last two. There are too many other good writers to read.

4.5 stars: I love me some Harlen Coben. This book has great characters and a compelling story and a fun twist ending. Well, you think it's over, and he's just giving you the happy ending/ loose ends and then he punches you in the face with a DIFFERENT surprise ending. Terrific storytelling. <3

Another Coban audio book I listen to while commuting during the week. I think this is my favorite so far. In fact I found myself wanting to go places alone all week so I could race through it! Detective Donovan gets clouded by nostalgia at times, but I think that's what makes her one of the most authentic characters HC has ever created. For books that could be considered dimestore thrillers, this author has a knack for making subtle social commentary. And I definitely like the one present in this book.

Listened to the audiobook and the narrator is 100% taking the piss.
