This was a fun ride. It's definitely got a Men in Black vibe. Mana has this interesting snarky-sarcastic/naive thing going on. I'm not sure it works 100%, but I liked her. I especially like Lyle. He's my favorite; it helps that he loves Doctor Who and so many other awesome geek things. It's a fun, light read.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this. The voice is good. The action is good and fun. I don't recall any terrible fails. Fun.

Once more, my kingdom for half stars. Alas, they don't exist. I'd probably give this one 2.5, inching closer to 3 as it's one of those rare books where I think it'd work better as a movie/TV show. Considering it's generally described as Buffy meets MIB, that makes sense. Thing is, it's not nearly as fun as either of those two (well, not the good parts of those two) and I get that it's Book One in a series (is it a series? is it just two books? I dunno.) but the ending doesn't quite manage to feel satisfactory after the gym showdown (which I actually really liked) and kind of just begs you to show back up for the second book.

I think there are fun ideas here. I didn't loathe the characters (yay!) and since I'm nowhere near the target audience anymore, I also understand if maybe they love it. I just didn't, though I am curious to see if book 2 is better.

Book #55 Read in 2016
Flying by Carrie Jones

Mana is a high school cheerleader who is popular, an average student and a nice girl. Little does she know that her mother is an alien hunter and that some of that skill has passed down to Mana. Then her mother is kidnapped, Mana is attacked in the school locker room by an evil alien and she finds out what the aliens are after.....will Mana's life ever be the same? This book was a good, quick read full of humor and action, as well as some romance. It seems to be a series starter. I received a copy of this book from Amazon Vine in exchange for a honest review.

For starters, I adore Carrie Jones and was super excited to see a new book/series from her!

Second, please suspend all reality when reading this book. It is super far fetched, but truthfully, that is what I loved about it. And lets all be honest, who here wouldn't love to kangaroo hop all over the place?

So it's lots of fun, give it a whirl :D

Okay, when you pick a book off the shelves that has a picture of a cheerleader and is described as Cheerleader vs. Aliens you should already be aware that this is not serious literature. For me, sometimes, that is the point. I want something light, fluffy, easy to read. I know this book got some bad reviews but honestly people, it is literally a book about a cheerleader who fights aliens. I liked it, despite that fact that I'm not sure what the authors deal is with having the main character have so many slang terms for sex. I don't really think that is how kids talk these days, but whatever. This book was so bad, it was good and for that it gets three stars from me! Plus, I love a great story where the girl is the hero and doesn't need saving by a boy.

I felt like there were awkward gaps in the narrative, where the author neglected to tell /show some action. Could have been better written.

This book was provided to me as a digital review copy by the publisher, via Edelweiss.

Mana is your typical teenage girl: crushing on cute boys, not overly concerned about school, and cheering for the basketball team. It’s during a basketball game that Mana begins to think that maybe her world isn’t as normal as she thought. First, the boy she has a huge crush on is kidnapped right out of the bleachers, and then, when she tracks the kidnapper and cute boy to the girls’ locker room, she exhibits skills that she has never had before. After the basketball game, Mana discovers her house ransacked and her mother missing. Now she has to figure out how to find her mother, who to trust, and whether it’s okay to be maybe almost in love with her best guy friend.

Flying was a quick, easy read. It had some nice action scenes, and the interactions were pretty funny at times. I worried at first that this would just be a Buffy re-run, but was pleasantly surprised. Overall, I liked the characters and the story, but there is something about it that niggles at me. It feels that the author went a little overboard making Mana believably teenager-y. Seppie and Lyle came across as realistic, but Mana seems almost inane. This is possibly because the book is written from her point of view, and therefore we are privy to her thoughts, and honestly, who really knows what’s going on inside a teenager’s head?

I think this is one of my favorite Carrie Jones books. I love the "Men in Black" aspects of it, and I love the way the cheerleader skills help her fight off bad guys. I was hoping for a lighthearted romp and I got one!
