This picture book about the restoration of a filled in creek to a thriving ecosystem is super darling. I particularly love the illustration style.

Imagine discovering that there had once been a creek where you stood, covered up by the desire for more tillable land. And then imagine that you could and would uncover it and bring it back to life! This book has my son saying, "Mom, what could I do, right now, to make our woods more natural?" This is a wonderful, and true story done with beautiful illustrations (although I do with just one little photo of the real place had been included). My only complaint is that there are these utterly unnecessary headings put on some of the pages. This isn't a book that needs them and the break up the flow of the story, I started ignoring them. Otherwise, this is a wonderful book.

A nice digestible kid's story about an ecosystem and habitat restoration. I think this story definitely has a place in classrooms, and I think we could use it for class visits that include the green roof. I like Claudia McGehee's scratchboard illustrations -- she really captured the liveliness of the prairie. One thing about the text I don't particularly care for is that it's divided into small titled sections. It makes reading it aloud really clunky. BUT one thing I LOVE about the text is that there are all these fantastic asides about the insects, animals, plants, and science behind the creekfinding process. Those little facts make for great discussion-starters.

A hopeful story, told in bold relief prints.

A true story about the rediscovery of a creek and the way it is restored. Paired with hand-colored scratchboard illustrations.

I would like this story more if it were retold as an inspiring family-friendly movie with Woody Harrelson as the rural scientist.
