I liked this continuation of the story despite it feeling cringe or cliche at times… I think I have to accept that is an inevitable feeling for a 25 year old reading YA. The pretty speak was a little annoying at first but becomes more natural over time. Also I know this book was written during a different time but there is repeated use of the “R” slur. Of course there has to be a love triangle, and in my opinion Tally and Zane’s relationship feels way more natural than her and David’s. I gasped when Tally called Zane David though. Some things didn’t make sense to me and pulled me away from the story - like the Rusty plague that spread through oil but also killed people??

Overall I love the drama and it’s still an interesting take on beauty culture.

This was basically a rehash of the first book, but with less substance. Like... we're right back to where we started? It wasn't bad, it just... I'll leave it there.
I know this is likely an unpopular opinion, but I really loved the slang the author created for this era. It really helped me immerse in the "pretty-mindedness" of it all.

Another wild ride. Tally as a Pretty was annoying at first, but I guess that was the point and I enjoyed her development. Not gonna lie, I might be Team Zane.

Pretties ups the stakes from Uglies, and i flew through the first half of the book. we are introduced to some even darker sides of this society, and our cast of characters fills out. However, once Tally crashes into the “reservation” and we find the primitive humans, i was lost a bit this plot point seemed to veer the story into a different direction that i felt didn’t entirely fit within the established world that Westerfled had already built. but with two book left, im happy to be proven wrong. im interested to see how Tally as a Special is handled in the remaining two novels.

This is a decent middle book. A little worse than the first, but definitely not boring.
My favorite parts are the descriptions of life in New Pretty Town. I like the way the Star Trek-like tech is described, the parties, the cosmetic surgeries they get.
In terms of the pace, it lingered where it was interesting, and breakneck when it wasn't, which I appreciate.
I knock it down to a 4 because it's a transition book, which always makes the ending frustrating, as well as the overused slang.
