Read this fast and furtively on the bus. Both women seemed a little too perfect, even in their flaws.

Setting: New England
Rep: sapphic protagonist and love interest

This is one of those little slice of life books where we see into a year of Flannery's life; it's not where she'll end up but it's a character forming year. I enjoyed this with it's short chapters; I hoped it might be a five star but didn't have that magic needed.

Interminable lecture.

They were many issues that I had with this book which eventually lead to me putting it down unfinished:
1) I did not like how pretentious the writing was trying to be.
2)The romance between the two main characters felt forced, uncomfortable, and honestly cringey. Anne, the older woman in this story, was so rude to her partner and just made their dynamic incredibly toxic.
3) I did not like the age gap between the two characters. The protagonist is 17 years old when she meets her future partner who is 28 years old and I couldn't get over that the entire time I was reading. As someone in my mid-20s I have zero desire to romantically pursue someone who is underage, as they are not able to legally consent nor would I have much in common with a teenager. This was my main issue with the book mainly because I felt like the age gap really did not add anything to the novel except make the readers feel uncomfortable.
There are a few more issues I had but this review would be way too long. Truthfully, I am pretty surprised that this novel is so critically acclaimed.

Easy to read with beautiful writing.

I’m a sucker for a hard and fast romance. I loved that there didn’t need to be much of a conversation about sexuality. I also didn’t mind that I knew where the book was going to end, I just enjoyed it.

i love this book with my whole heart. i love any writer who can make me feel as if i’m reading nabakov. the wording, the content, the context, was all such a beautiful blunder of words. i loved this. i have no words.
