A well-written book with absolutely no overarching plot. Disappointing.

I loved Tamora Pierce's Tortall series as a child through teen. I don't read them constantly, but I periodically come back to them. When I saw she had released a book about Numair, I had to read it.

I could not put it down. I read most of the book in 24 hours. I might have even read the whole thing in that time. It just captured me until I reached the end. The book is extremely long, but it spans years of Numair's story. The only thing I was unhappy about was the point at which the story ended. I cannot wait for the next installment to come out.

When I heard that Tamora Pierce was releasing a new book about Numair I freaked out, ran to the library, and reread all the Tortall books in preparation. Returning to Tortall after 15 or so years was amazing, I didn't realize how huge an impact these books had on me as child who felt like he had to hide who he was was to fit in. When I arrived at "Tempest and Slaughter" I was beyond excited to have a Tortall book with a male protagonist who I could see myself in, which is probably the most powerful lesson Pierce has taught me because just for a moment I knew what it felt like to a young girl looking for herself represented in a fantasy world.
Arram Draper's, who will one day become Numair, first book reminds me a lot in someways of Harry Potter, young mage at school learning his power. This book is a great start to what I hope will be another fantastic adventure in the Tortall universe and I am waiting with bated breath for the next book

Can’t wait for the next one!

Fantastic glimpse into Arram Draper /Numair Samalin’s early life. Really into the world of the mage academy and Carthak - if you’re a tortall fan you should really check this out.

I loved Tamora Pierce when I was a young teen, and remember reading the Beka Cooper series soon after it came out and being disappointed. I'm glad I gave this one a try. It was slow-moving and long, but I really enjoyed it and didn't get bored. The ending was rather abrupt. It's made me want to read the original few series - I remember the Immortals being my favourite, but nothing other than that. Hopefully I'll like it at much as I remember...

As a huge Tamora Pierce fan - this was good but not her best. Some amazing worldbuilding and scene setting as per norm, characters that I liked already going into the book, fun but a little clunky at times & some weird bits. Overall enjoyable but not sure I’d re read :)
