2.5 ⭐️ Hero wise, I feel like Tilney is up there with Mr Darcy if not better, oh and I love Catherine as a heroine! But everything else just felt flat. It was a bit of a drag in the middle and very rushed at the end.

Jane Austen does not disappoint! Her characters definitely speak like they're from nineteenth century England, but her sarcasm and wit makes the reading feel modern. I'll admit, I was panicking with 10 pages left and nothing at all resolved for poor Catherine, but it all worked out well at the end, and despite this not being one of her most famed works, and a sort of slow beginning, (but not as slow as White Fang...) it's now one of my personal favorites.

I don’t appreciate Jane Austen gaslighting me that General Tilney is somehow *not* a murderer!

3.5 stars. Northanger Abbey was fun. The description was a little inaccurate in that the “gothic novel satire” bit only came into play about 2/3 into the book and wasn’t a major component of the story (though it nicely emphasized certain features of Henry’s and Catherine’s characters). This is a story about a naïve young woman, one who is exceedingly earnest, who falls in love for the first time, both romantically and platonically. She’s forced to contend with people whose inner motivations and desires are foreign to her, and the consequences are amusing.
