First half was somewhat meandering but the second half was absolutely beautiful and poignant with some of the best prose I’ve read.

The Last Unicorn is a hard book for me to rate, because I didn’t love it through no fault of its own. It reads like a Ghibli movie (though the studio that animated it in 1982 would only later splinter into Ghibli) and itʼs undeniably brilliant, but just not my sort of fantasy. I donʼt regret reading it, but I doubt I'll ever read it again.

This story was very meta, calling to the reader's attention how fairy tales work and how heroes are made. It touched a lot on secret or hidden identities; the message seemed to be that we can fully realize our true power only when we are being our true selves (as in the case of the unicorn, Lir, Shmendrick).

It had funny little bits throughout, and I enjoyed the playfulness of the language.

But what I enjoyed most about this read is the physical object of the book. I checked out an old copy from the library. It's about 50 years old and it has that old book smell and the pages were thick and soft and the font was that thick old-timey font that was prevalent in the late 60s.

There wasn’t a reason, I was immensely enjoying this book. This was my favorite movie as a child, so it was super nostalgic reading through it. It was just a case of lack of time and some personal issues that came up at the time.
