A decently cute story about fated mates. I liked the female lead, and I enjoyed that the main couple didn't spend the entire book will-they won't-they.

The story lost a star for the way asexuality is represented here. The way the female lead was represented was "I'm asexual-oh but I guess I just needed the right man to come along" which is invalidating to the experience of aces. I'm sure it wasn't done maliciously, and the story is still good, but that part did make me cringe.

This is a fun series. I like that the second novel is more a prequel that ties up the first.

SpoilerOut of all of the books in this series, this one is my favorite. Probably because it felt like the most believeble? And sweet. But also a bit bitter with Nox not being able to control shifting between his forms...Especially because he broke his chains and can't control it SINCE HE WAS TRYING TO SAVE AMY. I hate Duke Haures. And the fact that Nox had offered Amy companionship as a scared child by being her "imaginary friend" in the dark? I appreciated that Nox had the inner monologue of recognizing he never felt attraction to her then because he knew she was a child, just wanted to be what she needed from him and protect her. I loved them on Halloween, too, when Nox could pretend he was wearing a costume. However, I think my favorite part was when Amy's ex stalked her and tried to hurt her and Nox showed up. Amy begged Nox not kill her ex, not because she cared about him, but because it could get Nox in trouble with Duke Haures, and so Nox OPENED A PORTAL AND SENT HIM TO SOMBRA TO BE EATEN BY THE CREATURES THERE and then was like "you said I couldn't kill him. I didn't. But I'm not going to help him out either." And the plot twist with Amy's aunt...I saw it coming a bit, BUT NOT TO THAT EXTENT.

F*ck you, Haures, you hypocrite.

This book is darker than the 1st, but still a fun monster romance. This takes place about 15 years before Book 1 when Nox and Amy become bonded mates.
There is a bit of worry about their relationship being taboo because she was a child when they met but nothing happens until she is 26 and he doesn't have any sexual feelings towards her as a child. Only marginally better but I'll take it.
