I like the Brooklyn Bridge, but never thought about what an engineering challenge it was. I have a new appreciation for it.

3.5 stars. As always, McCullough does a masterful job in recounting history. The only reason I didn't give this book 4 stars is because there are significant technical sections when I didn't have any clue what was being described. A few more diagrams would have been helpful.

The architect of the bridge became ill with "the bens" and was bedridden much of the time. His wife took charge of the project.

This was my fourth book by McCullough, and I think I enjoyed it the most. It’s well written and researched, it’s an interesting story, and it is relevant to society, politics, technology, engineering, immigrants, and even women’s early roles in engineering. I also noticed a few subtle connections to The Path Between the Seas with the mention of yellow fever and the French canal engineer (de Seps?). Thanks McCullough for another great work.

I tried to be interested. But I just couldn't muster a desire to read a biography of every single (rich) dude who even thought about the bridge. I'd rather read the Wikipedia article.
