Pretty Dead Queens has a lot of potentially and I’m just not sure I’m the right audience for it - I think a younger audience will eat it up and that it will do well in school and Public libraries.

The main character feels a bit full of herself and inauthentic, which I think is what turns me off with this one so much. Her life just seems to fall into place without single issue and that just doesn’t feel real? It feels the main character doesn’t actually experience any of the struggles you would typically expect and it seems things are a little too perfect.

The killer was incredibly predictable which made it less than fun and didn’t give me much of a reason to keep reading. While this wasn’t my favorite book and it definitely had its problems it still was a lot of fun all things considered and will likely do really well!

this is exactly what i wanted it to be. fast paced, the narrator did a good job, the storyline was predictable but still fun, and the characters were well-developed.

Another nice, solid mystery from Alexa Donne.

Well-plotted as always, with an ending I was satisfied to guess in advance because the clues were laid down well. My flatmate got to hear some predictions from me so clearly it lingered on my mind!

The book did run into a couple of problems I've mentioned before with books by this author, where I felt less immersed and connected to character than I could've been. I can't pinpoint exactly why except that the characters are quite formulaic. I also eternally run across dialogue that jolts me because it's so specific in pop culture that even though hardly any time has passed since publication it begins to feel dated. It was... very clearly written by a millennial about characters who are technically Gen Z. I say this being on the millennial/Gen Z cusp myself.
