pages flew by. some inconsistent whiplash character moments but the plot escalation and characters' descent into evil was entertaining nonetheless

Well written, full of twists and turns. Makes you feel for the main character, while also despising him as he truly is a monster. Great book that kept my interest the whole way through!

Good thriller. I remember my mom doing an object lesson where pieces of yarn represent lies. She tied a piece of yarn around my two hands held together. Of course I could get my hands loose. Then she'd tie another and another, representing more lies until my hands were bound.
This story is the same, two brothers and their friend find a small plane which has crashed. Inside is a bag with 4 million $$. They take one bad step after another until they've wrapped themselves into quite a disaster of lies and murder.
Well told story, very compelling. I think the main character seems so believable as just an ordinary guy until by the end he's gone way off track. It really make you think about what you would do.

3.5 rounded up. I loved/hated each character. So many mistakes were made.
Interesting and held my attention. The Ruins is my favorite by this author.

Scott Smith's books put people in situations where they have to make a choice and once made, ride the consequences. He does a great job here of showing how crossing one line leads to another. Brutal.

Just like witnessing a trainwreck or a car crash, reading this will enshroud you with a sense of helplessness that there is nothing to be done but at the same time, you will find yourself unable to turn away from the pages. It's that good of a thriller!
