Whilst large swathes of this were fairly easy to predict, the ending did catch me by surprise! I loved this book (Governesses and ghosts are like catnip to me) and once I got out of my reading slump I could hardly put it down. I'm a fan of Turn of the Screw by Henry James and this was a read in the same vein.

4.5 stars.
didn't like the formal and stiff writing style but the rest of the book was amazing. an excellent gothic story about ghosts and the poor people that have to deal with the consequences.
** forgot to add: i didn't like how the villain was mentally ill, and how this book portrays people with mental illnesses as violent people with horrible intentions.

I was so disappointed with this, once again a book had all the right ingredients but failed to deliver.
Ok I admit that it's me not the book, I'm searching for the perfect ghost story and to be honest this wasn't that bad. It's just that it reminds me too much of The Turn of the Screw, and while imitation is the purest form of flattery this pales in comparison.

A promising premise, but somewhat forgettable upon finishing. The story is packed to the gills with Gothic elements and Boyne does himself no favors by constantly referencing Dickens; I wish he had used more originality instead of leaning on his influences so much. The protagonist is fairly dull and while there are spooky features in both the setting and secondary characters, it's not enough to enliven a mostly predictable tale. I wanted more from this since it was highly recommended to me.
