Nie umiem inaczej ocenić książki ulubionego autora. Kolejna znakomita powieść.

Too sad! Might pick it up later but too heavy for me now.

It’s so so grim and bleak. There’s definitely trigger warnings to be weary of as well. The language is hard to follow at times, and their situation seems almost unbelievable.

Evered and Ada are heartbreaking. Voices are strong and distinct. I wish the part with them stealing from an Indigenous gravesite was not there (why? how did it help the story?) and the language (I understand the time, and still...) This part was fingernails on a chalkboard for me, otherwise would have been 5.

This is a tough one to review and I've gone back and forth over whether it should be a 3 or a 4 star rating! There is no mistaking that Crummey is a superb writer.. and on paper this is just my kind of book - two kids fending for themselves in the middle of the wilderness. But this story is grim, grim and more grim... I am definitely ok with grim, but it felt a bit relentless. It's one of those books where you feel compelled to read on, you love the writing and the setting, but the numerous events within the story made me feel dirty and uncomfortable the whole way through - to the point of feeling your stomach churn and a lump in your throat. Maybe that's the sign of a good writer? I just have a feeling this isn't Crummey's best. I won't reveal any spoilers but despite how I might have felt reading the events that happened, I still felt so much for these two siblings, two innocents, who have been left with so little to fend for themselves and have a chance at life.

Trigger warning: incest
How do you describe a book both lyrical and disturbing? I found myself alternating between admiring the writing and wishing I could look away as the inevitable crash of hormones led down an unfortunate path. I can't honestly recommend this particular title, though Crummey's writing is outstanding. It was just too disturbing to look at with an objective eye.
