It pains me to rate this so low because I love this series but this book bored me to death and I was so close to DNFing it but I didn’t want to miss anything important going into the next book. I didn’t hate this but it felt slow moving. For most of this book, Rig (Adam) is walking beside Gloam while he and the other two large beasties drag Mary & her RV through the wastes to her monster collection/home. Since there’s a cage on Gloam’s head, Rig & him communicate via a notebook when they stop for the night so a lot of this book is Adam’s inner monologue when traveling. I just never really warmed up to Adam for whatever reason so having the entire book in his POV except the last chapter made me even less interested in what was happening with his and Gloam’s relationship. I was so disinterested in their relationship that after the first few sex scenes, I skimmed them. My favorite part of these books is the monster anatomy and I had no desire to read the sex scenes??? WHAT!?

The world building and other characters were my favorite part and why I’m rating this higher than I should. The most interesting part of this whole book was the cannibal cult and I so hope we get more of that in the future because it was fucking interesting. How did all these humans start worshipping The Herald? I wanted more information because I find cults fascinating in general. I loved the reunion of the other characters and learning Edin was just outside the camp at the end? I was so excited because I love him. Knowing we are going back to the monster fights was even better because I felt like there were more stories to tell in that location. I was also invested in finding out about Seraph and wished we got to see the content in the rest of Mary’s journals instead of the sex scenes near the end. I can’t believe I’m saying these things!!

The more monsters I read about, the more I am enjoying this world. Gloam is a delightful cinnamon roll of a character, and Rig/Adam is just as sweet. As much as I enjoyed just reading about the two of them together, I also really liked the unexpected directions this book went. Somewhat gruesome, but undeniably engaging. I'm looking forward to where this series takes us next.

3.5 - liked it

This book starts a little bit before Ghost's book leaves off, and follows Ghost's friend and fellow raider, Rig. Rig is perturbed at Mary's presence outside their raider camp, but mostly at the monsters she has captured, such as the gray eye candy with a cage around his head and metal rings embedded around his spine. Rig is very tender-hearted, and decides to do whatever he can to help the gray beastie, Gloam.

This ends up in him leaving with Mary and her beasties before the end of Ghost's book. They embark on a cross-country road trip to Mary's menagerie, Rig trying all the time to figure out a way to free Gloam. And on the way, as these books go, he and Gloam get close. Reeeal close ;)

I liked this book, though I don't think I like Rig and Gloam as much as Mayne does (she professes them as her favorites in the author's note). I liked them just fine, but still nobody tops Danny and Wyn. Also, I think I still prefer Aury over both of them.

Speaking of Aury, I was glad to see him and Ghost show up in this book. I was really, really hoping, though, that after Mary's death, once they'd all met up they'd go to the cult HQ and Aury would go berserker on the cult. I really wanted that to happen, damn it, and I'm a bit disappointed it didn't. Still, though, I imagine we'll see the cult again, and I'm still holding out for Aury berserker moding it.

Speaking of the cult...holy fuck??? That shit's wild. It's far too interesting and horrifying to not see the cult again. I think reading these books are interesting, because sometimes you'll meet a character, and then you're like, "...hmm. You told us his name and gave us some level of detail about him. I bet your ass he'll get a book." And I feel like that's been pretty spot on so far, tbh. So there's the born-in-the-cult dude that helps Rig escape, and I predict he's totally getting a book. Then we'll see more of the cult and he'll get his HEA.

Mary being in a cannibalistic cult totally tracked. She feels like a very Umbridge villain, which I think are the most villainous of all. Her death was perfect. Having the little creepy pet be all cuddly to her and then the moment she dies going to town on her? It was just *chef's kiss*. Good job, Mayne.

We remeet Seraph in this book, and I know there's a book about him. But what was most intriguing is that I feel like Mayne hinted that there'd be a romance between him and Lilac. I was a little upset at the end of Ghost's book because it seemed like Lilac and Moth might end up together, and Lilac just seems too psychopathic for Moth. But Lilac and Seraph, the insane, traumatized, vicious monster? That seems like a perfect fit for Lilac. I look forward to see if that's what ends up going down.

Anyway, I enjoyed this book about as much as the other ones in the series, which is to say a fair amount. Would recommend if you like sweet gay romance, monster love, and the other books in the series.

I still love the writing and world-building but this wasn't my favorite in the series. Rig was impulsive and TSTL and I wasn't convinced Gloam wasn't just into Rig because he was the first person to show him kindness in years.

I know I start each review in this series with "I loved this book" "I loved this couple" but it's true!

I really liked Rig's character and personality and how he wants to help the beasties. As Gloam had issues talking, this was a much slower burn than the others, but I liked that their getting-to-know-each-other chapters.

I LOVED this book!
