Read this for my Modern Europe course, it posed interesting questions in ways I had not previously thought to view the death/labor camps of the Holocaust. Levi's account showed a much more complex version of Auschwitz and the psyche of different prisoners; with its various factions, the smuggling of supplies in and out of the camp, and all the other methods prisoners used to survive.

Absolutely depressing but incredibly well-written, thoughtful and even poetic. It's shocking the inhumanity to which hatred and indifference have brought humans in this context. I have little faith in humanity's capacity for learning from its mistakes, but I maintain hope that books like this help in creating a society of more cautious and recollected citizens on guard against repeating the atrocities of generations passed.Â
