Informative, heartbreaking and inspiring. The first portion that covers the investigation and the rescue of the dogs from Vick's compound is extremely difficult to read at times, but the details are necessary to complete the dogs' journey and see how far they came. It is truly incredible that so many of them were simply goofy puppies at heart and were able to acclimate to life among other dogs and humans, and Gorant does a nice job dispelling myths about pit bulls. The portions told from the dogs' points of view are unique and very effective. The "Where Are They Now?" section is a nice touch and I like how there is an update on every single dog and person involved in the case. Gorant has clearly done an extensive amount of research and relays the events in an impartial, even-keeled manner. I may have felt ambivalent toward Vick before, but now that I know all of the facts I view him as a thug and hate how he has gotten a second chance in the NFL after the horrifying things that he did to these innocent dogs.

It’s hard to know whether you’re rating the subject matter or the writing with a book like this. I do think the author did an excellent job making this an interesting read rather than just a factual regurgitation of the story.

I will say, you are probably not prepared to read the start of the book. I was audibly SOBBING for several parts.

But then there were so many beautiful moments. I loved this book even though there were horrible parts. I also liked how much information you get about dogs and dog behaviors. So good.

Very informative on the situation. Love that it focuses mostly on the dogs, not Vick.

The story of these dogs struggles and triumphs nearly reduced me to tears. I loved the intro about pitbulls in history and the details of the legal case. Any dog lover will love this book.

Michael Vick was a professional football player with the Atlanta Falcons at the time of being uncovered as a member of a dog fighting ring. He was sentenced to twenty one months in prison, which is not enough, in my opinion. (Despite his disgusting behavior, he was resigned with the Philadelphia Eagles upon his release. Apparently, having people with character on these sports teams is not something that is required or sought.) Police conducted a raid on his Virginia property, uncovering the dog fighting activities. Over seventy dogs were found in various conditions, and were seized. This book is the story of those dogs.

Unfortunately, dogs who have been used in dog fighting are often extremely aggressive to both people and animals. They are conditioned to be this way by horrible people, and this helps perpetuate the stereotype that these breeds are extremely aggressive all the time. A lot of the dogs that were seized were evaluated and deemed fit for adoption, and this book outlines the lives that have led since their rescue. I am so glad to see that some of these dogs were taken away from this horrible existence and given the chance to live a life that was happy and functional.

If you are interested in this book, it is currently available to listen to on Audible Plus with your membership. The listen time for this book was not very long. It contained a lot of details about the dog fighting ring and the court case, but the best part of the book were all of the survivor stories about the dogs. Despite the dark content, it was a really good book.

Had to split the star difference. Most of the story had a happy ending, but the other parts broke my heart. Dog lovers be warned, you will ride a roller coaster of emotions if you read this book.

As a militant vegan, and a total NFL dork I was over do for reading this book. Lost dogs is not the story of Michael Vick and dog fighting, but the story of the dogs who survived his dog fighting operation. For animal lovers this book will enrage, and enrich.

It gives the background on the case, which I feel I should have so I am more justified when I clap for every bone jarring sack Vick behind the piss O-line in Philly.

Some things I didn’t know. Vick wasn’t very good at breeding and fighting dogs, this ended up being a bad thing for the dogs. That is why he and his friends murdered several dogs. Some were beaten to death and one was even electrocuted.

Vick likes to tell the media that he was only found guilty of transporting across state lines. Don’t believe it. Lost Dogs tells the story of the caring and dedicated rescue groups and foster families who worked with the dogs to bring them back to health, and made them apart of their families.

The stories are tear jerkers and heart-warming. They sounded familiar to me, since my wife and I do Rabbit rescue and have fostered many animals over the years. If you like the dogs, or don’t understand the role that foster families provide for rescued animals then you need to check this out.

I absolutely LOVED this book, I think any animal lover or anyone with a Pit Bull should read it. It's sad though, I cried a few times.
