whilst I started off liking this book/story my interest wained half way through and I began not caring who committed what crime. I shall probably return to the author at some point and try a different book.

The central character in this Norwegian murder mystery is a middle aged, wheelchair bound lesbian - think Miss Marple meets Ironside. The plot is basically "And then there were none" in the Arctic. So not the most promising of set ups. But for the most part I found this book immensely entertaining - thanks mostly to the wonderfully dry wit of the reluctant detective. The end was all a bit far fetched and silly - as too often happens in these books (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo anyone?)But this was a cut above the average.

Really liked this book - Norweigian mystery a la agatha christie locked room, except it is a severe snowstorm. Halle is a retired policeman who was shot in the line of duty and is paralyzed. She has an abrasive personality and she is called upon to help investigate the murders and find who is the murderer. She hates the night because the murders occur during the evening.

I am reviewing this book for newmysteryreader.

Anne Holt is a decent writer.
The story plot was good.
The sentence structure great.
The characters were unique compared to each other, as in they all had interesting back story and mannerisms.
The main character, a disabled woman, had some serious prejudices towards little people, Muslims, and some others. Reminded me of my home, America. Didn't enjoy that part. Other than that it could be that was her characters rudeness for the sake of being rude, but typically people assume disabled people are always rude. Regardless, it worked for the story because it gave her more time to observe others and figure out who/what the murderer could be.
I did get bored towards the ending and wished for more excitement.

Felt promising quite a lot of the time but ultimately failed to go anywhere. The plotline just didn't hold up, even with lots of potential - snowed in, hotel miles from nowhere, etc etc.

Disappointing.
