The fact that she wrote this at 17 is seriously impressive. It was cute, definitely for teens. Not amazing but personal and sweet.

This was super cute. The author was 17 when she published it! Love her illustrations and her polished writing. She makes it look so easy! Looking forward to more from her.

I lived in Japan for a summer and taught English, so when I saw this book at the school that I teach at I had to read it.

The main character was born in Tokyo and raised there for her first couple years of life. Her mother is Japanese and grew up in Japan and her father is American. The summer before she turned sixteen, she returned to Tokyo to visit her grandparents by herself. This book shares images, drawings and stories from that summer.

I picked up this book prior to my vacation to Japan on someone's recommendation and I'm glad I did! I felt like I got a few really good recommendations of places to visit (and especially foods to try!) and I also enjoyed her fun asides about her personal experiences and family relationships.

It was quite short - I felt like she could've given a little more material. Also the version I was reading unfortunately had a lot of typos (hopefully a physical copy didn't have these?). Overall, an enjoyable 3-star read but nothing super inspirational!

I found the format of this book very stressful to read, but I loved the concept and the ideas that it presented.

This was a pleasant read, making me want to travel, especially now in 2021 when I can’t. The author does a wonderful job of exposing the intricacies of Japan, allowing readers to learn and experience the different places that she documented with her words, illustrations, and pictures. This was truly a unique book, and I look forward to finding others like it.

I give it 3 stars because I think it could’ve undergone another round of revisions to really tighten up the book and to give it a more cohesive thread to run throughout. I enjoyed the meandering style, but I sensed that it could’ve been more purposeful. Also, the book could use more editing, as I found several errors throughout, but that’s not always the author’s fault.
