This book took me a while to get into. The push pull and the beginning felt exhausting. Eventually I was here for the characters and rooting for them. The ending felt a tad long, could have been more succinct.

So I wake up at around 2:30am and at first just lay there with my eyes closed. Half an hour later and sleep still eluded me. So I decided to read a bit thinking it'll tire me out or tire my eyes and I can try again. Was not the case because where I had left off was very fast paced and exciting. I finished the book and suddenly it's 4:15am.
What a great read. Yes the majority of it was slow but the nuances and hints of magic kept me going. Plus I loved Paula Brackston's writing style. It seemed poetic and made everything sound beautiful even the depressing harsh winter that was conjured by that wicked opposition. I liked that even though Morgana was mute I was still able to care for her as a character and care about her.

I would definitely want to pick up another of Paula Brackston's books. Maybe [b:Lamp Black, Wolf Grey|23014879|Lamp Black, Wolf Grey|Paula Brackston|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1422634881s/23014879.jpg|9876647] because that sounded like it had some Arthurian legend in it.

This story of a mute (by choice) woman, Morgana, who has powers she doesn't understand, who marries a widowed drover, Cai Jenkins, and finds space for herself in the relationship, but very little space in the village he lives in. There are forces at work here and it will take all her power to keep alive and to keep Cai alive.

I enjoyed the read, the characters were interesting but the villains were a little thin.

I literally breezed through the pages because I refused to just sit there and do anything else without knowing what fate awaits Morgana and her husband Cai.

Morgana is a Welsh witch who lost her ability to speak eversince her father upped and left her and her mother. She only came to know of just how great her magic was when she moved with her new husband to their new farm home, the Ffynon Las. There situated in the farm was a curious old well which held even greater magic that only the most deserving witch could harness.

Enter Isolda Bowen, one of the town's most respected citizens, who was also, secretly, a terrifying dark witch who vowed to claim the position of Mistress of Ffynon Las at all costs.

Goodness, just reading about her witchwalking in the shadows to torment Morgana and the people she loved really gave me the creeps. Nobody likes a dark evil witch, especially one that is obsessed with seeing you dead. Fans of fantasy and magic and romance will enjoy this book. Two thumbs up!
