I'm not sure what I was expecting from this novel, but I can definitely say I didn't get it. I listened to the audiobook and while the narration was good, this book didn't really have any redeeming quality. It was one series of tragic circumstance after another without anything positive in between. I found this story heartbreaking, tragic, and depressive. I stuck it out hoping for some wonderful conclusion at the end, but that was not the case either. While I can have empathy for CC and her life that is filled with one crappy situation after another, this book felt like nothing more than consistent doom and gloom with no sunshine at all.

I have mixed feelings about this one. This book was beautifully written, but veeeeery heavy topic-wise. C.C. is extremely parentified, suffering years of emotional abuse at the hands of both parents and having to pick up the pieces of their messes. I repeatedly found myself thinking, “damn, that’s fucked up.” The ending is what honestly knocks down the star rating for me. It was so abrupt and didn’t come to any conclusion at all. It felt like there should have been more chapters, like something was missing. None of the characters are particularly likable (except for occasionally C.C. and

C.C.’s boyfriend before he hooked up with her mom

). I don’t regret reading this, and it is short so I didn’t spend much time on it, but I would not read it again.

I think this book aged for about 10 years but it was so heartbreakingly beautiful, I don’t even mind. If you come from a dysfunctional home or you had to raise yourself read this book! It gave me hope that despite all the cruelty life throws at us, it could all work out in the end <3
