Great book about a man and his struggles while smuggling Bibles into Russia. Miracle after miracle, Brother Andrew continues to trust in God despite what the circumstances brought along. Very inspiring.

Short Review: this is a classic 20th century missionary story. I first read the comic version of the book in the late 1970s as a child. I am not sure if I have read the full thing before or not. This is worth reading but I read it in tension with The God of the Mundane (http://bookwi.se/god-of-the-mundane/) because I also agree with the concept of that book that most of our lives as Christians deal with the day to day and not the miraculous. The difficulty is holding up not normal examples of Christian faith like this, while trying to value the every day faith of the majority of Christians that will be never known. I did appreciate the focus of this book on trying to serve Christians in more difficult situations than what most of us in the West have to deal with.

Somehow, I had never read this book until now.

I have known about Brother Andrew for years, and have used him in my chapels several times. He is such an inspiring person, and a really kind gentleman to boot. Christ pervades his life and motivates everything he does. If I could have a fraction of his faith, my faith would grow by an awful lot.

But I had never read this book until now. It's all the the more surprising since 4 of my cousins grew up in Alkmaar, Netherlands, where Brother Andrew spent much of his early years. (BTW, I don't think they have read it either, but I am working on that.)

This book was a thrill to read. He is vulnerable, his stories are captivating, and his passion for Christ is infectious. This book is also a great way to learn about the Iron Curtain.

I will now be recommending this book to everyone I know.

I really enjoyed it! Loved reading about what God did through Brother Andrew, I wished it was longer to be honest!

God's Smuggler is a fascinating book and challenged my view of how one ought to approach living in Christ. There were so many amazing events in Brother Andrew's life, that I had a difficult time believing some of the accounts, though they are well documented and known. God calls some to do extraordinary things in this world for His Church and for His glory some of which merely require faith to obey Him and just do what we know is right. This man learned to obey and God managed the extraordinary part.
The events of the story made me say, "WOW!" However, the writing caused me to get bogged down at times, so I took away a star.

I have heard about this book for most of my life and, while I didn't doubt the quality of the content, I expected it to be hard to read. After deciding to tackle it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was easy to read and extremely engaging. Funny stories throughout the book made me laugh and peoples poignant desire for God's word brought tears to my eyes on several occasions. Written in a style similar to [b:The Hiding Place: 25th Anniversary Edition|616705|The Hiding Place 25th Anniversary Edition|Corrie ten Boom|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1176354785s/616705.jpg|878114], I highly recommend this powerful story of a life of service, adventure and faith.
