I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this book. The concept is great! I love the idea. But I just couldn't get into the characters. Some of the reveals in back stories bugged me as well... I dunno, I guess I'm torn. I'll probably read the next one just to see what happens, but I won't go out of my way to do so.

I love Adam Silvera's contemporary novels, and im fussy when I read fantasy so im not all that surprised that this was just not for me. Which I cannot tell you how devastating this is for me. I wanted to love this!

Pros
- it had the typical Adam Silvera writing style
- I liked the main characters and the 2 main POV's
- I liked the premise when I read the blurb.

Cons
- Confusing
- Confusing and a little ..... childish? ..... is that the word im looking for?
- Started off great and then got sort of boring.

I will still remain a fan of Silveras work. But contemporary only.

I have seen quite a few negative ratings of this book but, personally, I loved it.

The characters really carried this book and they were all wonderful. Each one had their own flaws and strengths, even the side characters.

The plot itself, although it felt lacking in places, all came together in the end, like a brilliant and incredibly sad jigsaw. This book definitely took a while to get going but, once it did, it was amazing, with surprises seemingly every page.

The world itself is possibly one of the best modern fantasy worlds that I've read, with yet another new take on what it means to be hero. The magic system and fantasy universe was unique but easy to understand.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.

I love Adam Silvera's contemporary books. But his first dabble into fantasy was just confusing?? I was lost half of the time and I'm still not entirely sure I understand the system.

This is the first book I’ve read by Adam Silvera. Though I thought the story was entertaining enough and had potential, I was a little disappointed with how it was executed. I felt a lot of things in the book were very cliché. The backstory behind the environment or the world the characters were living in was not really explained, and character development was shaky at best. I found myself predicting correctly exactly how this book was going to turn out, and it honestly made me want to put it down and quit reading a few times. Since it’s the first in a series, I’ll read the next one to see if this improves, but won’t be exploring any of Adam’s other books.
