This is a closed-door, slow-burn, strangers to lovers, mutual aid, arranged marriage romance with Christian elements. I found parts of the setup to be a bit clunky, and ultimately, the book wasn't what I was looking for.

I did find the premise intriguing enough to download a copy as part of a "cowboy romance" freebie deal. With a little more polish on the bits that clunked, this would have been a 4-star read for me, but the clunks were too distracting.

If you enjoy slowest of slow-burn, closed-door genre Romances, or are looking for something with Christian elements (but not overtly "Christian Romance") you'll probably enjoy this book/series more than I did.

On His Bended Knee
The Brides of Purple Heart Ranch, Book 1
By: Shanae Johnson
Narrated by: Meagan Moses

This is a quick and beautiful listen of seeing someone for who they are and falling in love. Dylan returned from the war broken. Not only had he lost his leg, but his life as he knew it. Now living on a ranch with other wounded warriors, he finds himself in a predicament. The town zoning laws require him to be married. But who would want a man who is not whole? Maggie lost her vet tech job for not doing what she is told. Keeping the most damaged of animals, she finds her heart cannot put them down just because they are not your typical pet. Now with nowhere to go and with no job, she seeks help and finds herself at the Purple Heart Ranch. With a deal on the table, her pups would have a place to run and Dylan's problem would be solved. But will it work in the long run? Love, love love this premise. The wounded warriors are one of my favorite listens, and are the program near and dear to me. This kind of story shows us all the damage that is caused, both physical and mental that our vets go through. Then we have Maggie, quirky, but a heart of gold. It's the perfect match and a heartwarming story.

Meagan Moses brings this gem to life with a variety of voices. From Maggie and Dylan to the others on the ranch, she delves into each of their personalities and finds a fitting voice. She easily transitions between male and female and had my heart pulling for this couple with every scene. Loved her performance.

While I didn't find this book entirely unpleasant, there's still many ways I would only see this as a one star read.
The pacing was a disaster, for starters. You barely even get to meet the character's before you are thrown into their life problems. It's very insta-lovey, but goes about it in an oddly slow way that can be difficult to explain in a simple review.
I think it is a decent way to knock off a book on your annual reading goal, but otherwise it is not worth the time to read this novel.

I do not mean to speak negatively of the author or of their writing abilities; I know it can be incredibly difficult to write a story. I mean this review purely as honest criticism of a manuscript. I wish the author well in the writing of all upcoming books on future.

The good part about this book were the dogs! I got this book on stuff your kindle day. The whole plot happens over the span of I think 4 or 5 days. Enough time for the group of soldiers to take the woman into their group as one of them, although they interacted one time. It was way too fast paced and totally not for me

Sweet insta-love, marriage of convenience. The story behind the soldiers and the ranch they rehab at would make great full length books.

No. Just no.
I understand that the "marriage of convenience" trope was the main pull but they were declaring their love for one another less than a week after meeting. The first half of the book was all about his PTSD and her abandonment issues but nothing was ever explored. Within a day, they were already claiming to be super in love. Maybe I'm cynical but it was completely dumb.
