This was an incredible read. The backstory and exposition is given at the right pace to match the plot and characters. The shifting of perspectives is well done and doesn't get confusing.

Once I got into it, I enjoyed the thief-centric story. There's some interesting world building, particularly in relation to the marginalisation of the struck, the victims of the magical plague. Some elements of the writing are a bit clunky -- although at the conclusion the rationale for it becomes clear, I didn't feel that the second person voice for Everen worked very well. And the use of they/them is interesting (including the idea of thinking in capitals for the honorific), but other than the class element, not very well theorised or worked out in terms of other elements of a gender-fluid society (which is more than just pronouns). One senses that Lam is seeking to do something with gender more fundamentally in this book but that aspect feels quite muddled, at least at this stage of the trilogy.

Overall, I think I enjoyed this book. It felt quite slow at the beginning, and some of the world building did feel a little choppy to me. But once Arcady and Everen finally meet, the plot picks up and I was more engaged. Their relationship is what holds together the book for me, especially as they start to grow closer towards the end.

As a dragon book, this did feel unique, with all of the dragons essentially being trapped in another world. I would be interested in seeing more of this world in the next book, though!

I really enjoyed this book. I think Lam has a beautiful yet very different type of writing style. This book has multiple POVs but our main dragon Everan’s POV is specifically speaking to our other main character Arcady. It makes everything seem even more intimate once you really get into the story.

This book has such a classic high fantasy vibe yet at the same time it addresses things that are a bit more current in our own society today such as gender identity and gender roles. I thought all of these discussions were well thought out and spoken with care.

Now this is a slow paced book and I don’t say that as a negative. The world building and the self discovery I think played key roles in the overall story development. If it were fast paced then everything would seem extremely rushed and nothing would have felt important. I enjoyed Everan learning how to human lol.

This book is very unique in a lot of aspects and I am excited to read book 2 when it comes out!
