The pacing of the book was pretty fast, but I did feel like the start was a little slow.  I enjoyed the journey of the book and I think the story was unique and well-developed.  I would say that my only qualms about it is that it is not extremely well translated.  I think that it is important to have a good translation because I could tell that some phrases and sentences were oddly worded.  In comparison, I read The Thief Lord by the same author and did not find the same oddities in any sentences.  I would also say that there were some very Western/European undercurrents of thought, quietly assuming certain kinds of inferiority of other customs and cultures.  Other than that, I really liked how the twists and turns of the story were there without making it too unbelievable, simple, or stressful.

Wonderful book for novice fantasy readers. The audiobook was read masterfully by Brendan Fraser. Recommended as a gateway book for kids ready to try a longer, slightly epic, fantasy rooted in the present.

This was a little boring at times, but the magic and friendships kept me going.

This was the first proper book I ever read when I was around 5 or 6 and the story has been stuck in my heart ever since. This is the book that drove me to become obsessed with books and it made me who I am today, this book will always have a special place in my heart.
