I always enjoy coming-of-age stories of self-discovery like this.
Also, I feel like the main character deals with some worries and expectations I've felt before, and I really felt seen ー her struggles with fears of catastrophe really mirrorred my own, which are connected to my OCD. It really felt like she struggled with OCD triggered by her mom's death, and that completing the list during the summer helped her ease her suffering a little. I could really relate to her as I used to be a carefree child, too, and started to feel more and more scared of living my own life as I grew older and my OCD worsened. It's nice to see an inspiring story like this, where she found strength in her friends, family and in newfound relationships. Makes me think that maybe I can find some strength, too.
Overall, a really lovely, sweet, inspiring book. A perfect summer read!!!

The grief suffered by the main character (and other characters) due to her mother's death by brain cancer is one of the main themes of the book.echomariet's review against another edition

Our main character is dealing with the heavy loss of her mother, losing her friend group, having to leave her childhood home, and rekindling an old friendship.
The pace starts out slow and it feels like you’re grieving with her as she processes her thoughts and feelings while slowly trusting her new-old friend. The pace picks up the more she lets go of her fears and tries to right her wrongs, enjoy her summer, and eventually falling in love.
Moderate: Grief and Death of parent
Minor: Homophobia
The death of our main characters mother is one of the main plot points, it’s referenced throughout the whole book. The topic of grief is also very important to the plot as our main character processes her grief and learns to let go. There’s only a slight mention of past homophobia towards a side character, as this story takes place in a small rural town. Our main characters don’t experience any overt homophobiaallie_in_wonderland's review against another edition
