I enjoyed this even more than the first book - I think because the plot was more cohesive, all of the different sub-plots fit together better. And although it was a little darker than the first book, everything was still handled with a light enough touch to keep it from getting TOO dark.

Regency fantasy with sprinkles of humor and ridiculousness throughout to keep the soul-eating monsters from becoming too scary. Good fun.

I loved pretty much everything about this book.

was okay.  Second in series and it kind of felt like filler when it came to the overarching plots/themes.  Not much forward movement and too much debutante concern.

With so much left unfinished at the end, I'm relieved to discover this is not the duology I thought it was, and a third book is coming! Much of the same fun and adventure and world building I enjoyed from the first book, though this one did get a bit darker.

While no more graphic than the first, this story line does touch on matters of human trafficking, implied rape, and other difficult topics. There is also, I think, more death seen in story, and that does include some unpleasant injuries (just not to a point that I consider 'graphic' personally). The story also begins to explore just a little more, the differences between 'good' and 'evil' magic. I'm sure some younger teens could still handle the veiled references, but I'd be more hesitant for very young readers to experience this one.
