I kept referring to this book as, “the fiction version of Educated”. It has similar themes and I loved Educated just as I loved this book. I love stories of people who against all odds accomplish something amazing. The last 30 minutes had me on the edge of my seat. I really liked the murder mystery part of the story too. I love mysteries but not too scary or dark, so this was perfect.

This book was a slow read. It was okay. But definitely over rated.

Where the Crawdads Sing is a work of art that deserves to be cherished and called a classic. I’m honored that I had the opportunity to read this book and meet Kya giving me a window into her life.

***a special thanks to my friend who recommended this book to me- I will be forever grateful!

Atmospheric and rich in detail, I felt myself in the world of the coastal marshlands. I had to check my disbelief more than once as Kya survived repeated abandonment, and then raised herself with a routine or schedule that included meal times, worked to earn an income, and navigated the waters on her own without mishap. Even so, engaging characters and compelling story structure.

I wasn't particular in wanting to read this book, but several friends (one even sent me a copy) suggested that I do. I am happy that I did. It has been awhile since a book has taken me on such an emotional rollercoaster. I could imagine and feel everything that Kya was going through. Her entire life was written by. her experiences.

Trigger warnings: neglect, abuse, and almost rape

It just wasn’t for me. And that’s ok. Not every book is going to be someone’s cup of tea. I know people sho absolutely loved it and then I know people like me who couldn’t get into it. It just wasn’t what I was expecting or had hoped for.
