The Fall of Souls by R.A. Moreau

Fresh new voice in storytelling. I enjoyed the story R.A. Moreau chose to tell. Her characters and world building were fantastic.

What caught my eye was the cover. I read just a few lines of the blurb (I like going in blind) and got the message that it was Nubian mythology. Hook. Line. Sinker.

Ra is a jackal and gives off "wolf paranormal romance" vibes. Nice little twist to an old genre. If you love PNR, The Fall of Souls will be a must read. Hot, steamy romance without over doing it.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, so I could give an honest review.

If you are trying to get your feet wet in the fantasy world, THIS is a good book to start with. Especially if you are a romance reader. This was a really good read. I loved Onia & Ra & their journey. I really almost gave this book 4 stars but then I realized it was only because I flew through it & was like wait?! That’s it?! I would definitely be here for a part two to see Onia on her journey & maybe catch up with all the traitors? I felt like there was some loose ends that could’ve been tied up but I’m not sure if the author plans for this to be a series. All in all, this book was a good intro back into the fantasy world for me.

I first heard about this book through TikTok through user @winingboutbooks who pairs wines with her latest book recs. I only listened to the first sentence before running over to pre-order the book, and then coming back for the remainder of the video.

I love Egyptian mythology, but the truth is, there aren't many writers that will take on the subject matter.

Onia is a young woman who has the gift to read souls raised by her late father. Ra is a guardian, son of Anubis, who has been sent from the Halls to protect Onia and bring her back. Because Onia is more than she has been led to believe. As their oaths cross and their can becomes entangled, Onia and Ra grow closer than either could have imagined. This is a steamy romance laced with a great deal of lore and culture that was absolutely beautiful. There is intrigue, mystery, horror, and a story that will wind itself around your heart and not let go. Moreau is THE fresh new voice we have all been waiting for.

I rarely read romance (more of a high or dark fantasy reader) but this was better than I could have hoped for. I ate up every little crumb Moreau left. Not only is the story wonderful, but her writing style was absolutely flawless.

I highly recommend you grab a copy for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

The Fall of Souls is a fantasy romance based on Egyptian mythology.

After the death of her beloved father, Onia discovers she's the daughter of a goddess and must take her place in the hall. She travels there with the handsome Ra, eldest son of Annubis, who is her protector. The pair are pursued by jealous and vengeful gods and need to hide their growing love for each other in order to protect the hall and the balance of souls passing through.

The world building is this book is so good and unique and easy to follow. There's enough drama and tension with a smattering of betrayal thrown in too. I felt that the book was a bit too focused on Ra and Onia as there were plenty of other interesting characters but we don't really get the opportunity to get to know them. I'd be interested in knowing if there'll be further books.

Onia is a good FMC. She stands up for herself but still has a lot of heart. Ra is everything you'd expect from a love interest; brooding, possessive, understanding, turns into a deadly jackal when angry.

I thought this was a unique twist on the fantasy romance genre. A great read and I'd love to see more in the series.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc in return for an honest review.

Easy fantasy romance. The slow burn was steamy. The plot was very interesting and so was the magic system. I love a touch her and die trope. The world building was very light but as a romantasy, this was great.

good read

I was so excited to read this book and it did not disappoint. I’m excited to see what the next books are like and to dive deeper into this world. Also love that the characters are various shapes and sizes of black excellence.

This was so darn good. I couldn’t put it down. I absolutely love mythological retellings and for this to be Egyptian mythology instead of the usual Greek retellings made it even better because it was so different. I loved that there was instant attraction, but it was still a slower burn. I need the next book ASAP.

Sadly, I didn’t like this book as much as I thought I would. It has one major flaw which I couldn’t ignore; it has misunderstood its target audience. The novel expects readers to be familiar with Egyptian mythology (which they will be to some extent), but readers usually want to become familiar with something by reading. For instance, the weighing of a dead person’s heart. If I don’t know what the practice means, I can’t understand why it’s important. The novel should have taken the reader by their hand and guided them through each scene by revealing more and more layers of the mythological world.

The writing also missed the mark for me. The author used vocabulary that readers wouldn’t typically see in romance novels. How often do you use “reverberate” in your everyday conversations? Simpler language would have done much better since this is not a fantasy novel.

What I did like is that some of the world building is based on scents and smells. I wanted to see more of that. I’ve never been to Egypt (only Morocco), and I wanted this novel to transport me into a new fantasy world. We also get some good descriptions, but the overall structure issues ruined the experience for me. Less is more sometimes.

This is officially my first book from NetGalley. Time to celebrate!

The build up of the characters was well planned out ,the first two chapters gives you a well needed description of the main characters so it may seem a little slow at first, but it picks up As you read on, and you will not be disappointed. Great read!

Arc received from Netgalley for an honest review.

This story was such a pleasure to read from beginning to end.

In this book we follow Onia who slowly discovers the extent of her powers, learns more about herself, and finds romance along the way. She meets Ra when in need of help, and as he protects her along a journey they take together, something blossoms between them.

I knew from the moment I started reading that the writing style worked well for me. It was easy to consume and flowed really well. Alongside the writing we have the characters. I loved so many of them, going from our main characters Ra and Onia, to side characters like Abraxas (loved that guy). Despite the quick shift in the romance halfway through that slightly threw me off, I still liked the relationship and cheered them on while the tension between them built.

If you like reimagining's of mythos with steamy romance, a diverse cast of characters, tattooed and protective men with sprinkles of magic, then pick this up. It releases on December 19th and I hope to see it in peoples hands near the end of the month.

Wishing the best to R. A. Moreau with her debut, and look forward to reading more books by her in the future.
