2022:
For a second there I really considered giving it a lower rating than I did the last time I read this book (the middle has always been a bit tough for me to get through) but I decided on keeping the 5 stars bc the ending is just!! my favourite of all the endings in this series!! and most of the book is a delight despite some of my minor qualms!
So much of this book is just permanently imprinted on my brain and yet, AND YET, I still feel giddy with excitement and genuinely worried whenever I re-read it. Just like the first one, this book just hits a very specific spot in what I like in stories spot on and I can't describe it completely - it's something about the combination of some really interesting new characters, development of existing ones, broadening of the worldbuilding and the way Julia Golding writes - it just satisfies me.

2016:
The two first books in this series are definitely my favourite. The Gorgons Gaze is just as well written and lovely as the first book, and I really enjoy how it continues expanding what we already know about the Society and Kullervo. One of my favourite things in this book, is how we see our characters in a new light, how they react to situations that doesn't appear in the first book. We get a glimpse of the difficult relations in the Lionheart family and the strained relationship between Col's parents, while introducing new characters and conflicts. The character development, even for the minor characters is just astounding. I'm also really glad how this book focuses a lot on the environment, and we get to know how the mythological creatures feel about humanity. All in all it is a very well-written book and definitely one of my favorites.

2013:
It's a fantastic sequel. Sometimes sequels tend to be not as good as the first, but not this one. It's exciting and you just have to read to the next page to find out what happens. It's a wonderful book, and I highly recomend it to people who've read the first.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the first book in this series until I read book 2. It's a great fantasy!

Second book in the Companions Quartet. In this installment, Connie and Col and the Society for the Protection of Mythical Creatures must figure out how to prevent the destruction of Mallin's (Merlin's) Wood - home to many mythical creatures, including the gorgon to whom Col's mother is companion. They must also fight Kullervo, the mythical equivalent to the universal companion, who is raising an army of mythical creatures to destroy all humankind.
