At multiple points I was thinking this is childish or this is so superficial, and then I remind myself that this is a YA book and that’s to be expected. Overall an interesting path for society and a pretty fun read.

I definitely see the point the author tried to make but it ultimately failed
The premise is good, execution is ugly :)

The beginning of this book was really not great, and it gave me a lot of bad will towards the rest of it. I thought once the story got going, it was actually quite fun, and there were some details that I really enjoyed
(like the twist with the oil getting infected and that's why society crumbled)
.  I think the reason I disliked the beginning so strongly was mostly just a strange choice in descriptions and names, the cat vomit-coloured sky, all the names being so infantile (middle pretties, littlies, etc.) and alongside that, the absolute lack of interest of Tally in her surroundings. It kept taking me out of the story, and even when it got better, it just kind of stuck around. I do think it was refreshing to read a ya dystopia that did not focus heavily on the character's romance (especially considering the boom of those in the 2010s); however, I do wish the characters and their pull towards each other had been a little more fleshed out. It really felt like they just all of a sudden kissed for no reason. All in all it was fun and a fast and easy read.

This was my first attempt at getting into the current YA craze. I have not really read too many YA books that have come out except Hunger Games, and I really loved those so I thought that there may have been something else out there for me. This one seemed to have good ratings, so I gave it a shot.

It just wasn't my cup of tea. The premise sounded decent, and I totally got the underlying message that I think the author was going for, but reading it was kind of a bore. Except for a few hoverboard action type sequences, it was all like "you're ugly. I want to be a pretty. uglyville, pretty town." blah blah etc. etc. I feel like it could have been a little less obvious, but I guess it is geared for younger audiences, so I'm not sure what I should expect from books like this.

One thing that I do know, while this first in a trilogy of books does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger, I won't bother continuing the series. Especially since it seems to be more about the pretties and their "bubbly" lingo just makes me want to cringe.

Kin’s battle book - didn’t love it, but I can see the draw to the young adult crowd. Some good action - left me really wanting a hoverboard....
